PROCEEDS

Will be held on Saturday September 26th, 2009.  As always, the race site will be near beautiful Prescott, Arizona.

The net proceeds from this event are the fund raiser for Venturing Crew 1 to enable them to continue to test themselves with outstanding high adventure activities.  In the past, the Crew has taken on many exciting challenges, like summitting Half Dome in Yosemite Nationa Park, Deep Sea Fishing, Epic Backpacking and competing in Adventure Races.

This event has become so successful that beginning in 2007, Crew 1 has donated a portion of their own proceeds to the Prescott Kiwanis Foundation Endowment Fund so that the kids of Prescott would benefit in perpetuity.  They have also donated to other causes like  Camp Rainbow (a children's cancer camp).

We hope to make a tradition of contributing to the Kiwanis Club of Prescott, as they are a huge force in getting things done for the children in the Prescott area.

RACE HISTORY
This race was originally designed as a way to incorporate the many activities that Boy Scout Venturing Crew 1 took part in and form them into a one day race for the Crew members. Our first event covered a total of 12 miles and we had six 2-person teams made up of our teenaged Crew members.  Over the years, we have grown into a full fledged Adventure Race!

Now open to the public, it has evolved into one of Arizona's most popular and the state's biggest Adventure Race.  Teams from as far away as Florida and Washington  have come to compete in the GAR.

In 2009, the race will be open to the general public, AND also have a division in which Venturing aged teens may participate for a discounted entry fee.

The race is named in posthumous honor of a former BSA Troop 1 Eagle Scout named Shane Gilmore. Shane was killed in a tragic car accident involving a drunk driver. We chose to name the race after him because he was very active in the high adventure aspects of scouting, and would have loved the sport of Adventure Racing.
