GILMORE
ADVENTURE RACE 2008
What to Expect
When: Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008
Where: Somewhere near
Prescott, Arizona
What: Short
course is 13-17
miles, long course is 25-230 miles, both are hours of intense fun.
GET
READY
Even though it is a
one-day race and a
lot of fun, you can’t prepare for the Gilmore Adventure Race
by sitting
at home. Expect four to eight hours of non-stop motion with a
few
special events just to shake things up. Here are a few
pointers
to get you on the right track.
GET AND STAY ORIENTED.
Make sure your navigator has a good understanding of UTM plotting!
Knowing how to read a compass and a topographical map are also very
important. When
you check in on race day, look for landmarks
nearby. All
maps necessary to finish the race will be provided.
BE PREPARED.
Know
what gear you want to have with you. Make a list.
Check it
twice, or three times even. Trail running shoes, biking shoes,
clothing, water,
energy bars and gels. Bring enough for yourself and extra for your
teammates. This is a totally self-supported race.
PLAN.
Know what you
are going to do at the Transition Area before you arrive
there.
Less time in the TA means more time tearing up the race.
EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY.
Expect to be moving, running, jumping, riding and going in one form or
another for at least four hours, maybe as many as eight. Use
your
time in Check Points and the Transition Area to hydrate yourself and
take
in food for fuel. Never be without water and a spare energy
bar
or gel within easy reach. Have a blast!
THERE IS NO
“I” IN TEAM.
This race is all about one thing: teamwork. You run or hike
as a
team, ride as a team, eat as a team and tough out a twisted ankle as a
team. Lift your buddies when they are down and let them carry
you
when you need a hand.
DID WE SAY GET READY?
Train. Get out there. Ride and run some
trails. Use a
map and compass, read contours, learn to navigate. Adrenaline
and
energy drinks will only get you so
far. This is a race! Suffer now so you
won’t later.
After
the Race
Each participant will
receive a
commemorative T-shirt. At the conclusion of the race, there
will
be light refreshments, an awards ceremony and random prize
drawings. This will be a great time
to
visit with other teams and talk about the trials and tribulations of
the race. No matter how you finish, you will feel like you
conquered the world.
